Different in more ways than one
Here you will find the manual “Different in More Ways Than One: Providing Guidance for Teenagers on Their Way to Identity, Sexuality and Respect” which was made in 2004 by a European project-team called “TRIANGLE” (Transfer of Information to Combat Discrimination Against Gays and Lesbians in Europe), consisting of representatives from five countries. The team set out to develop a manual for educators and counsellors on how to deal with lesbian, bisexual and gay issues in multicultural contexts.
Heterosexism and homophobia can be a real problem for young people, not only for those who experience lesbian, bisexual and gay feelings themselves, but for their heterosexual peers as well. In counselling and education, it is extremely important to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere in which young people can explore their emotions and make their own decisions on the way they choose to live.
On this page you will find the manual itself and some information about the “TRIANGLE” team.

More information on this project
A European effort
This project was financed by the European Union with funding from the Action Programme to Combat Discrimination. We would like to thank the EU for making it possible to create this manual, which is in itself a good example of true European collaboration and will we hope, provide an example of good practice of combating discrimination as well.
The project team and the process
The manual was developed by the “TRIANGLE” project team, made up of representatives from five countries:
Dr. Pascal Belling (Ministerium für Gesundheit, Soziales, Frauen und Familie des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, project director)
Flora Bolter (ProChoix)
Peter Dankmeijer (Empowerment Lifestyle Services, now GALE)
Martin Enders (SchLAu NRW)
Margherita Graglia (Arcigay)
Karen Kraan (Schorerstichting)
Dr. Stefan Timmermanns (SchLAu NRW, project coordinator)
Wolfgang Wilhelm (Wiener Antidiskriminierungsstelle für gleichgeschlechtliche Lebensweisen).
The short stories in every chapter have been written by the author and youth worker Adriana Stern. She already published “Hannah und die anderen” (Argument Verlag 2001) and “Pias Labyrint” (Argument Verlag 2003).
We did our best to raise the quality of this work as much as we could. We even carried out research to get objective feedback. Responsible for the research were Dr. Floor Bakker and Ine Vanwesenbeeck of Rutgers Nisso Groep.
Contact
This manual was developed in 2002-2004 by a transnational team, made up of GO and NGO representatives from five countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. This team was helped by a number of experts in national linkage boards and by a huge number of respondents who participated in the research.
