Nigerian research recommends sensitivity training for university students - August 31, 2019

31 August 2019 - A recently published study in the Journal of LGBT Youth on university students in Nigeria confirms generally homophobic attitudes. But at the same time, the interviewed students admit to being able to see lesbian, gay, and bisexual students as humans when they look beyond the aspect of their sexual orientation. Researcher Okanlawon recommends to offer heterosexual students sensitivity and anti-prejudice training and to train teachers to acquire positive pedagogical competences to offer such education effectively.

Dutch antibullying policy critically evaluated - August 17, 2019

August 17, 2019 - The Dutch organization Edu-Diverse published an analysis of antibullying policies in the Netherlands today. The analysis of 40 pages concludes that much improvement is still possible. Schools are only to do research, have a plan and a coordinator, but there are no substantive criteria for quality. Edu-Diverse states that the neoliberal Dutch policy means that schools regulate themselves and that the possibilities for individuals or social organizations to help improve the quality of antibullying policies at school are very limited. Still, it suggests some ways to improve the situation.

Nepalese teachers trained again by colleagues and lgbt-activists - August 10, 2019

10 August 2019 - Nepalese teachers were trained again on how to deal with LGBTI issues in their schools. With assistance of the Blue Diamond Society, the Chetana teacher training group and GALE, training were offered in previous years as well. The partners have sought funding to expand these trainings beyond the province of Pokhara, but the unique trainings remain on limited to a few schools because donors do not consider it a priority on the same level as (heterosexual) gender violence.

Polish court stops distribution LGBT-free stickers - August 01, 2019

1 August 2019 - The Warsaw District Court ordered the newspaper Gazeta Polska to stop including LGBT-Free Zone stickers in its publications pending the outcome of a rights activist’s case. The newspaper now avoids the ban by distributing a revised version LGBT Ideology-Free Zone.

Hungarian volunteer education group raises funds with Lego - July 28, 2019

28 July 2019 - The Hungarian volunteer education group “Getting to know LGBT people” has initiated a fundraising program by selling self-made Pride Hearts of Lego. They ask supporters to help spread the word and share pics with the heart using the #myprideheart hashtag.

US school comes back from inadequate response to homophobic leaflets - July 02, 2019

2 July 2019 - A junior high school in the USA tries to address racist and homophobic flyers that students were passing out earlier this year. The homophobic and racist flyers had crossed-out rainbow flags and showed confederate flags. The school’s initial reaction to the flyers was a disaster. It forbade both confederate flags and rainbow flags, and clothing with messages supporting LGBTQ equality were banned. The teacher who supported the Gay-Straight Alliance was no longer welcome to come to work.

Fill in the EU LGBTI Survey before 20 July - June 29, 2019

29 June 2019 - The EU LGBTI Survey was launched on Tuesday 28 May and it will close (extendend deadline) on July 20. The survey will collect the experiences of discrimination and hate crime as well as the views and challenges faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people across the EU. GALE encourages her European members and others to fill in the survey before July 20.

Poland vows to stop programs that include LGBT education - April 30, 2019

30 April 2019 - In March 2019 Poland’s ruling party, The Law and Justice Party (PiS), made it an election promise to block all planned LGBT education. A new school same sex education program was planned by the city of Warsaw but the PiS states it is a threat to polish values and culture. Study on homophobic bullying starts in Greece, Cyprus and Lithuania - January 15, 2018

15 January 2018 A large study tackling the issue of homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools has just started in 3 European countries (Greece, Cyprus, Lithuania). The study is a needs assessment in the context of a new EU project "HOMBAT - Combating HOMophoBic And Transphobic bullying in schools". The project focuses on training teachers.
