Brazil launches sexual diversity education award
2 February 2017 - The Brazilian organization “Dignidade” has founded an award for educational projects on sexual diversity. The Education Prize for Respect for Sexual Diversity aims to recognize, value and encourage the promotion of respect for sexual diversity in the educational environment in Brazil.The idea for the award developed by Dignidade in cooperation with GALE and is organized by the Brazilian Institute of Sexual Diversity – IBDSEX.
Award guidelines
The award guidelines stipulate that "sexual diversity" refers to sexual orientations other than heterosexual, and gender expressions that do not conform to those traditionally expected. "Sexual diversity" in this context does not refer to filiations or practices considered illegal by Brazilian legislation.
The award is meant for initiatives to promote respect for sexual diversity in educational environments in Brazil. Submissions can be presented by individuals (including adolescents younger than 18), public or private institutions. The initiative should be conducted in the last four years (2013-2016).
Any person or organization can only submit one initiative. These should fall into one or more of the following categories:
- Research on education and sexual diversity
- Thesis / Dissertation / Monograph / Course Completion Work / Article on sexual diversity in the educational environment
- Audiovisual production (including TV and Radio) on education and sexual diversity
- Publication on education and sexual diversity
- Pedagogical project on sexual diversity
- Site on education and sexual diversity
- Initiative to promote respect for sexual diversity in elementary schools
- Initiative to promote respect for sexual diversity in secondary schools
- Initiative to promote respect for sexual diversity in universities
- Initiative for the inclusion of transvestites and transsexuals in the educational environment
- Education in human rights and sexual diversity
Submissions are possible until 24 February.
Award ceremony
The choice of initiatives will be made by a Judging Committee of IBDSEX. The award consist of a trophy, a certificate and PR in relevant media. The winners of the awards will be made public at a ceremony on 17 March. The ceremony will take place at 7 PM at Thalia Society, Rua Comendador Araújo, 338, Centro, Curitiba-PR. This is a side event to the 5-day course GALE offers in Curitiba that week.
