UNESCO Liaison Officers

Summary of the job

Since UNESCO has offices in Paris and in Geneva, we are looking for liaison officers in these cities. The GALE-UNESCO Liaison Officer is responsible to maintain contacts with UNESCO at the global level. He/she identifies activities and networks of UNESCO and opportunities for collaboration, contacts relevant staff and if possible, visits UNESCO events, relates UNESCO information to GALE and vice versa and connects GALE members to relevant UNESCO contacts. There are two aims to this work: using UNESCO expertise in the GALE context and promoting the use of GALE expertise in the UNESCO context. The framework for collaboration between GALE and UNESCO is Annex II of the GALE request for operational relations with UNESCO.
This function is vacant. Currently it is fulfilled by Wim Monasso.

Organizational Context

This function is part of the action plan of Working Group International Collaboration. Read more about the mission and objectives of this group. The volunteer discusses progress on the Group Mailing List and with the chair of the group. Due to finacial restrictions, the group is not able to meet in reality and has to collabroate virtually. We lso aim to create a discussion group/mailing list for national UNESCO representatives. The framework for collaboration between GALE and UNESCO is Annex II of the GALE request for operational relations with UNESCO.

The Job

We ask the active member/volunteer to take care of these tasks:

  • Study UNESCO policies and strategies, identify opportunities for collaboration
  • Collaborate in the Working Group International Collaboration to make a SWOT analysis of opportunities to work with UNESCO
  • Contact UNESCO representatives in the UNESCO offices and national UNESCO representatives virtually
  • Set objectives on how to further the mission
  • Send relevant information to GALE working groups and individual members

Investment and Returns

Investment: We estimate this job is going to cost you maximum 8 hours a month. This will mainly be surfing the web, e-mailing and phoning at your own preferred times or at the times your contacts are available. Sometimes it will involve having a social or formal meeting with a UNESCO representative or attending a conference, so time investment may vary per month. GALE will refund your travel costs, phone costs and other costs after this is agreed in writing with the Executive Director.
Returns: GALE will refund your travel costs, phone costs and other costs after this is agreed in writing with the Executive Director (we dont have a regular budget for this!). Apart from all of this, you will have the rewarding feeling to effectively fight discrimination of LGBT people and the fun of being part of en enthusiastic team!

Requirements

We think you need to meet some requirements to do this job successfully:

  • Living in Paris or Geneva (seat of UNESCO)
  • Analytical thinking
  • Skills for international diplomacy and advocacy
  • Diplomatic skills
  • English and French
