Brussels Liaison Officer

Summary of the job

The Brussels Liaison Officer is responsible to maintain contacts with ILGA (International Lesbian and Gay Association) and Education International (EI)at the global and European level. He/she identifies activities and networks of ILGA and opportunities for collaboration, contacts relevant staff and if possible, visits ILGA events, relates ILGA and EI information to GALE and vice versa and connects GALE members to relevant ILGA ands EI contacts. There are two aims to this work: using ILGA expertise and contacts in the GALE context and promoting the use of GALE expertise in the ILGA and EI context.
This function is vacant. Currently it is fulfilled by Peter Dankmeijer.

Organizational Context

This function is part of the action plan of Working Group International Collaboration. Read more about the mission and objectives of this group. The volunteer discusses progress on the Group Mailing List and with the chair of the group. If possible, the group tries to meet annually. However, due to financial restrictions, this may not be possible in 2007.

The Job

We ask the active member/volunteer to take care of these tasks:

  • Identify activities concerning education and capacity building where GALE and ILGA can collaborate
  • Maintain contact with ILGA representatives
  • Set objectives on how to further the mission
  • Work out collaboration plans (especially on information exchange, local capacity building and advocacy when education about LGBT issues is being threatened)
  • Regular contact with ILGA staff (involve ILGA members in projects, use exchange opportunities of websites, monitor and promote strategic collaboration)
  • Regular contact with the EI officer for LGBT issues and identify opportunities for collaboration with local trade unions

Investment and Returns

Investment: We estimate this job is going to cost you 8 hours a month. This will mainly be e-mailing and phoning at your own preferred times or at the times your contacts are available. Sometimes it will involve having a social meeting with ILGA and EI staff or board members when they are in Brussels, or attending a conference, so time investment may vary per month.
Returns: GALE will refund your travel costs, phone costs and other costs after this is agreed in writing with the Executive Director. Apart from all of this, you will have the rewarding feeling to effectively fight discrimination of LGBT people and the fun of being part of en enthusiastic team!

  • Living in Brussels (seat of ILGA and EI)
  • Analytical thinking
  • Skills for international diplomacy and advocacy
  • English
