GALE launches survey on service provision for LGBTIQ+ during Covid-19

> 23 September 2021 - Today, GALE launches an international survey to map how LGBTIQ+ people have experiences the Covid-19 epidemic, and whether the epidemic affected their possibilities to access necessary services. The survey is part of a needs assessment by the RAINBO partnership, which is active in 6 European countries: Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and the UK. The results will be used to develop an international online course for service providers.

Cultural dimensions to the Right to Education

>> 15 August 2021 - In April, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, Koumbou Boly Barry, issued a submission tot the Human Rights Council on the cultural dimension of the right to education. This submission includes a number of remarks that are relevant for LGBTIQ culture in relation to education, and the report even mentions gender and sexual diversity in some remarks. For example that In Japan the mandatory use of uniforms in schools promotes rigid gender norms and limits the rights of transgender students, and that in some countries access to information about LGBTI people is forbidden.

Ghana proposes LGBT censorship legislation

>> 25 July 2021 - Yet another country has proposed legislation to censor any neutral or positive expression of sexual preference or gender identity. This time it is Ghana, where the government proposed a so-called “family values bill”. The bill proscribes “propaganda” and advocacy for “LGBTIQQIAAP” and related activities. The text of the bill is full of offenses and lies about LGBTI+ people to support the censorship. It proposes sentences of 3 to 10 years imprisonment for any visible education or advocacy activity, and even for forming an LGBTI+ organization.

LOCAL NEWS: CHINA

Chinese WeChat deletes LGBT accounts university students

>> 7 July 2021 - The Chinese tech giant WeChat social media platform deleted dozens of accounts of LGBT groups run by university students, as well as private accounts of students running the group accounts. According to WeChat the LGBT profiles had broken rules on internet information. Spreading positive information is forbidden by the public internet (censor) authority of China.

Polish minister of education calls LGBT people perverse and abnormal

> 5 July 2021 - The Polish minister of education Przemyslaw Czarnek called the equal rights march on 19 June in Warsaw an insult to public morality. He asked if the participants were normal. He later came back of this remark, saying he had meant the protester’s cross-dressing behavior was not bizarre, “not the participants themselves”. But at the same time he called non-heteronormative desire a perversion.
