GALE asks members for feedback on strategic plan

12 July 2018 - GALE asks its members for feedback on the new draft strategic plan for 2018-2022. The key priority of the strategy is to map the situation of students in countries, to make policy recommendations and to stimulate and support cooperation between NGOs, schools and the government for structural improvement. Secondary goals are to collects and disseminate good practices and to develop key methods to facilitate change in schools.

GALE evaluates data protection policy

7 July 2018 - The GALE Supervisory Council has discussed the data protection policy of our organization. The Council urged the director to take additional measures to educate the members about the risks. The recommendation followed a thorough discussion about the need to collect information about sexual orientation and gender identity and the clear risks involved for the members. Should GALE take full responsibility for these risks?

Pronouns day initiative asks support

3 June 2018 - An international volunteer group has taken the initiative to launch “Pronouns Day”. 17 October will be dedicated to action to be clear, educative and sensitive about how we use pronouns. Using self-chosen names and pronouns is a basic right. But we may inadvertently hurt someone when we use only “he” or “she”. Pronouns Days will help to educate people and generate ideas on how to be welcoming to each other.

GALE publishes first overview of LGBTI education in Europe

24 December 2017 - Today GALE published the first full overview of how European States implement the right to education for LGBTI (DESPOGI) students. About one third of the States (15) were rated as "supportive", as many were rated as "ambiguous" and slightly more (17) were scored as "denying". Peter Dankmeijer, author of the report and director of GALE comments: "It is good to see significant progress in a number of States. It shows strategic action with cooperation between NGOs, the education sector and the government works: schools can change. But the report also shows a lot remains to be done."

EUROPE: ANTIBULLYING CERTIFICATION

EAN partnership starts European project to develop antibullying certification

> 22 January 2018 - This month, an international partnership of EAN members started a European project to develop a European certification of secondary schools on the topic of antibullying. The goal is to develop a procedure and instruments schools can use to reflect on the quality of their antibullying policy and to improve it. The project also aims to stimulate the introduction of national and European mechanisms to set quality guidelines for antibullying policies in schools.
