John McAllister

I am a senior lecturer in the English Department at the University of Botswana. I have also taught in Kenya (U of Nairobi, USIU) and Canada (U of Saskatechewan, Laurentian) and worked off and on as an editor and writer for human rights NGOs. I recently edited Sexual Minorities, Human Rights and HIV/AIDS: A Trainer's Guide and Sexual Minorities, Human Rights and HIV/AIDS: A Resource Manual for the Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA). I am lead editor of Q-Zine, a quarterly online magazine and website of African LGBTI arts and culture. My latest scholarly article, "Tswanarizing global gayness: the ‘unAfrican’ argument, Western gay media imagery, local responses and emerging gay culture in Botswana," has just been published in the journal Culture, Health, and Sexuality. My current research interests include the experiences of gender non-conforming students in the Botswana tertiary education system.
